Open letter to the Mayor from a member of the deaf community

David Barnes is a friend of mine. Intelligent, college educated, spiritual, all around good guy.  He’s also an advocate for the deaf.  We communicate better on facebook because although he speaks fluent American Sign Language, I can fingerspell my name.

Today, he posted an open letter to the Mayor on facebook, and with his permission, I”m sharing the letter with my Village Thinker readers.

Dear Mayor Baldwin and members of the City Commission,

My name is David Barnes and I ask that you respect the Deaf Community and advocate for our needs:

1. We need closed captioning at the local Movie Theater and the District Manager is avoiding us and not responding to our emails. Can you help us make contact with him?

2. Police and Fire should be working with Deaf Community in their training to prevent our frustration with the communication barriers. Deaf Community, Police and Fire should take time to learn American Sign Language.

3. Battle Creek employees should provide post-storm cleanup to Deaf people with disabilities at no charge.

4. We need to set up a Deaf Awareness Week in downtown of Battle Creek to provide education to people.

David can be found on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/davidbarnesjr

If anyone on the City Commission is interested in learning more about Deaf culture and the needs of the Deaf community, let me know, and I’ll introduce you to a few friends of mine, including Valoree Boyer who is the Executive Director of DeafLINK.

  1. Most of Deaf Senior people , who had to trouble with post-storm in last summer. We had to help them to clean up the post-storms, but We took the risk to cut some branches down near the wires. But We don’t have proper equipment to use safety than going to the ER. We had trouble with the tree company who had very busy with Battle Creek area. I had Back injury with the post-storm from too heavy branches without the saw. The Reason, We did not know that We had tornado in Battle Creek Area and did not go to the basement. I was reading my book in my living room during the Tornado. How Dangerous was The tornado hit my home without getting Warning? Deaf people don’t have equiment for Weather warning to tell us to go to the basement. The Weather Equiment for the Deaf costs around $400 to $500. We can’t afford the price.

  2. Well, I don’t think see why he thinks the city should provide post-storm clean to dead people for free. Deafness is not a disability that effects ones able to perform labor. If a person had another issue such as being elderly or wheel-chair bound then, certainly. But. just being deaf. No. A big no.

    • He’s not asking for it for dead people (funny typo, btw), or for people who are “just” deaf. The letter states “Deaf people with disabilities”, which means people who are not only Deaf, but disabled as well.

  3. Laura, Thank you for making a post in here. I am forwarding to hear from Mayor and Battle Creek People. from David Barnes.
